I would like to draw people's attention to a letter sent recently to residents of McBride Avenue in Crescent Beach.
The letter opens with the statement: "The city is committed to providing a balanced approach to improving road safety, congestion, and parking in Crescent Beach."
I think safety is the most important word there. I'm talking about the safety of hundreds of pedestrians of all ages and abilities who use McBride Avenue to reach the pier or beach during any good weather we have, especially July and August.
The original plan was to have a pedestrian walkway from Sullivan Street all the way to the pier on the north side of McBride with cars parked parallel to form a buffer away from traffic. The letter I refer to was sent to residents of McBride only telling them of a change to the plan so that the walkway goes on the north side from Sullivan to Target Street, then crosses over to the south side and continues from there to the end.
I don’t see how this is going to improve pedestrian safety, as they now have to cross all that traffic twice to get to the beach: once at Target Street and again at the end. Unless ÐÔÊӽ紫ý is going to install traffic lights at those points, I see a very dangerous situation of pedestrians and motorists competing for road use, and you know who wins in that situation.
Also what ÐÔÊӽ紫ý engineering has done so far looks useless. They are using gravel as a walkway which meets up to each driveway that it crosses, then starts again on the other side of said driveway. Will the interface be smooth so that strollers, elderly people, toddlers and the like do not trip and fall. ÐÔÊӽ紫ý would be responsible for any accidents that might occur.
I believe the best solution is an asphalt walkway all the way down the north side of McBride from Sullivan to the pier, as originally shown to us at a Crescent Beach property owners' meeting.
