CLOVERDALE — ӽ紫ý RCMP say a police incident in Clayton Wednesday morning involving a man who “threatened to harm himself” was “resolved peacefully.”

Corporal Scotty Schumann said a distraught man, believed to be armed with a firearm, was verbally threatening to harm himself and others.

Schumann said Clayton Heights Secondary and Katzie and Hazelgrove elementary schools were locked out “although they were not involved directly or in harm’s way during this incident.”

Police asked media to refrain from posting photographs or revealing information about police tactics while the incident, in the 7000-block of 191st Street, was ongoing. They closed 191st Street north of 70th Avenue to the 7100-block. Shumann said the “distraught” man surrendered to police at about 1:30 p.m.

“Thankfully no one was injured during this standoff,” Schumann said. “The man, whose identity cannot be released, will be medically assessed while investigators start to piece the events together.”

All roads have since been reopened.

Mom Katie Grant went to pick up her 14-year-old son from his first day of summer school at 10:45 a.m., and was told they were not letting kids out.

“There are lots of police cars. Maybe 10?” said Grant, who works in the circulation department of Peace Arch News, as she waited outside the school. “I’m seeing a (police officer) with a gun and a police officers in green army gear. Some of the guys have helmets and long rifles.”

ӽ紫ý School District spokesman Doug Strachan said police asked the school to be put in “lockout.”
