A recent two-day enforcement blitz by Delta police found more than half of commercial vehicles inspected were unfit for service.
From June 19-20, the Delta Police Dpartment's Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit alongside various other partner agencies held a joint road safety operation focused on commercial vehicles that may not have been properly maintained and could have posed hazards on local roads.
According to a DPD press release, the inspections conducted during the operation prioritized critical aspects such as mechanical components and driver qualifications, specifically assessing brakes, tires, lights, steering, load security, driver licensing compliance and driver fatigue.
During the two-day initiative, 84 vehicles were inspected, predominantly light commercial vans, pick-up trucks, small delivery vehicles and trades vehicles, as well as some larger commercial vehicles.
A total of 403 violations were recorded during the operation, resulting in 49 vehicles — 58 per cent of those inspected — being deemed "unfit for service" and requiring immediate repairs before proceeding on their way, while 17 violation tickets were issued to vehicle operators.
"As always, the Delta Police Department and its law enforcement partners strongly encourage all commercial vehicle operators to conduct thorough pre-trip checks for the safety of all road users," the department said in a press release.
