Vancouver Giants improved their record to 19 wins, 14 losses and four overtime losses, with back-to-back shutouts on Friday, Jan. 3 and Saturday, Jan. 4, both courtesy of rookie goaltender Burke Hood.
Giants have won five of their last six games.
Friday's game saw Hood make 27 saves to record his first career Western Hockey League shutout, as the team hut out the visiting Wenatchee Wild 3-0.
The game was scoreless through 40 minutes until the Giants scored three goals in a seven-minute stretch in the third period, first Ryan Lin, then Cameron Schmidt, followed by Ty Halaburda. Jaden Lipinski recorded three assists.
Vancouver outshot Wenatchee 36-27.
Giants Head Coach Manny Viveiros was "really impressed" with Hood.
"He was there to make those saves for us," Viveiros said. "I was pretty happy with how he was smothering pucks and his rebound control tonight was really, really good.
Hood described giving a "little sigh of relief" at the end.
"When that final buzzer goes on your first shutout, you're pretty glad," Hood said. "When you see that first goal, you think 'okay, now we have the chance to do something here' and then they just kept coming for us and it worked out well."
Saturday, Vancouver did it again, defeating Kelowna Rockets 7-0 on the road, with Hood recording his second consecutive shutout.
Adam Titlbach scored the first two goals of the game, followed by second period goals from Cameron Schmidt, Tyler Thorpe and Tyson Zimmer. Jaden Lipinski and Jakob Oreskovic each scored in the third.
Giants Associate Coach Adam Maglio said "it just felt like it was clicking" thanks to Hood.
"I think having that kind of goaltending, which has been really good for the most part here in this last stretch, gives a lot of belief too, to the group, and we're just feeding off it. We're building our game."
Hood, who was named first star of the game for both games, hasn't allowed a goal in his last 149 minutes and 42 seconds of action, as he stopped 25 shots in relief against Victoria prior to his back-to-back shutouts on Friday and Saturday.
Schmidt remains tied for the WHL-lead in goals, now with 28, with Swift Current Broncos forward Luke Mistelbacher
Leslie is now 4th in scoring in the league among defencemen with 37.
Next, Giants are back on the road for two games in Prince George on Tuesday, Jan, 7 and Wednesday, Jan. 8.
