One person has been arrested following a standoff Thursday night at a White Rock home.

Staff Sgt. Rob Dixon said Friday morning (June 7) that police were called to the area of Blackburn Avenue and Chestnut Street in connection with an individual who had breached court-ordered conditions. The incident escalated when officers attempted an arrest.

"He barricaded himself in a room in the home and made statements that led police to believe he was armed," Dixon told Peace Arch News by email.

The Lower Mainland Emergency Response Team was tasked to the scene, and neighbours report hearing "flash bangs" deployed.

In a post to the White Rock/South ÐÔÊӽ紫ý Community Group Facebook page, one area resident writes that she saw "about 40 vehicles with many swat (sic) vehicles."

Officers unscrewed a neighbour's outdoor light and went into a backyard with a police dog and drone, before returning with a "door rammer and 2 chainsaws," the commenter continues.

The flash-bang noise, yelling and the dog "barking like crazy" followed, she adds.

The incident continued for "a few hours," ending with one person seen in handcuffs.

The resident notes that police had been focused on the house "all week."

Dixon said Thursday's incident – in which a 39-year-old man was arrested – lasted approximately three hours. Police throughout were intent on "the safety of all involved."

"Fortunately no one was injured and the suspect was safely taken into custody."

Investigation is ongoing.
