The overall severity of crime in Delta rose slightly last year, but was lower in relation to the provincial average than in 2022.
On Thursday (July 25), Statistics Canada released the 2023 Crime Severity Index (CSI) data for all jurisdictions throughout Canada.
The CSI is a national measure of police-reported crime. Index scores are compared to a baseline of 100, which is calculated using historical data.
Unlike the traditional crime rate, which only counts the number of crimes in a jurisdiction, the CSI is a comprehensive measure that also takes into account the seriousness of crime — a higher score indicates a greater number and/or greater severity of crimes, and a low CSI number generally indicates that a community is relatively safe.
in 2023 was 63.94, up about eight per cent, or nearly 5 points, (59.12).
Violent crime severity was 69.93, up 11.67 per cent from 62.62 in 2022, while non-violent crime severity rose 6.63 per cent, from 58.23 to 62.09.
As in 2021 and 2022, Delta had the third lowest overall CSI score among Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley areas policed by municipal departments, while it climbed from fifth to fourth lowest overall in the region.
Delta’s CSI score was also about 48 per cent below and 23 per cent lower than the — both those averages have increased from 2022 and 2021.
A press release from the Delta Police Department states Delta's performance against the provincial and national averages underscores the dedication and hard work of both the department and the community in maintaining a safe and secure city.
"I attribute our overall low CSI rate to the unwavering commitment of our DPD team," Chief Const. Neil Dubord said in a press release. "Their dedication to upholding the safety of our community is evident in their daily work, and I am incredibly proud of their remarkable contributions."
The District of North Vancouver once again had the lowest score in the region with 37.29 (up 2.7 per cent from 2022), followed by Port Moody with 41.2 (up 0.1 per cent) and West Vancouver with 60.61 (up 6.22 per cent).
Langley City again had the highest CSI score in the region with 241.07 (up 11.07 per cent from 2022), followed by Hope with 218.88 (up 39.25 per cent) and Chilliwack with 153.42 (up 19.47 per cent).
For comparison, Vancouver had a score of 97.03 (up 5.55 per cent), ÐÔÊӽ紫ý 110.77 (up 9.01 per cent), White Rock 90.53 (up 18.81 per cent), New Westminster 91.02 (up 4.36 per cent), Richmond 101.23 (down 42.4 per cent) and Langley Township 72.85 (down 3.03 per cent).
