A woman in her 90s was killed Saturday afternoon in a collision near 72 Avenue and 132 Street in Newton.
A man has been arrested and 鈥渁lcohol and speed are believed to be contributing factors in the collision,鈥 a statement by the 性视界传媒 RCMP said.
Officers say they discovered a badly damaged Toyota with two people inside at the intersection at about 3:20 p.m.
鈥淚t was obvious to the police officers that a high-speed collision had occurred, which was confirmed by witnesses at the scene,鈥 性视界传媒 RCMP said in the news release issued just before 9 p.m.
鈥淭he witnesses advised that the other vehicle involved, a grey Dodge, had fled westbound on 72 Avenue, at a high rate of speed. With the assistance of witnesses, the suspect vehicle was located, and the driver was taken into custody.鈥
Police say the driver of the Toyota was transported to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The elderly woman died at the scene.
鈥淣o information on the occupants of the Toyota is being released at this time, as notification of the next of kin is pending,鈥 the statement said.
鈥淭he investigation into this collision is ongoing, and the intersection鈥 will remain closed for some time.鈥
Police are seeking the public鈥檚 assistance, and are asking anyone who may have witnessed the collision, or witnessed how the grey Dodge was driving either prior to or after the collision, are asked to call 604-599-0502 or to call Crime Stoppers.
