Port Moody Police say a Maple Ridge man in his 20s was arrested after waving a machete in a Lower Mainland hospital Tuesday.

Police say a Maple Ridge man in his 20s was arrested after waving a machete in a Lower Mainland hospital Tuesday.

Port Moody police were called to Eagle Ridge Hospital on Jan. 14 just after 8:30 p.m. after receiving a number of 911 calls reporting a man waving a machete in "a threatening manner and causing a disturbance" inside the hospital's emergency room. It triggered a "code silver" at the hospital. A code silver, according to , is an active attacker and it can be activated by anyone who discovers, witnesses or encounters an active attacker.

When officers arrived at the hospital, they found the suspect outside the building. Police said the suspect was taken into custody without further incident. Mental health issues were determined to be a factor and he was apprehended under the Mental Health Act and taken to a psychiatric facility.

Port Moody Const. Sam Zacharias said the incident remains under investigation, and charges will be recommended to the B.C. Prosecution Service.

Police are asking any witnesses who have not yet spoken to police to contact the Port Moody Police Department.
