UPDATE: Green candidate makes it a three-way race in Delta South

Sophia Borghetto is the BC Green Party's candidate in Delta South, bringing the number of people running in the riding to three as the nomination period draws to a close.

Borghetto was recently named the party's choice to challenge incumbent  (previously with BC United, now running for re-election as a BC Conservative) and BC NDP hopeful .

Candidate nominations with Elections BC close at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 28.

Born and raised in Delta, Borghetto is deeply rooted in her community and passionate about environmentalism, Indigenous rights and mental health, according to a bio shred on the .

"Sophia is dedicated to creating meaningful change by advocating for stronger environmental protections, emphasizing that small, everyday actions can lead to significant impacts," her bio states.

"She also champions the expansion of accessible Indigenous land stewardship programs, believing that Indigenous communities should play a central role in land and resource management."

Borghetto is also committed to addressing mental health and addiction services, calling for more accessible and affordable treatment options.

"Her personal experiences and educational background give her a unique perspective on the importance of these issues, and she is eager to bring forward fresh solutions to support those in need."

Borghetto is currently pursuing degrees in political science and Indigenous studies at the University of Victoria, and if elected plans to balance her studies with serving her constituents.

"With a strong focus on social and environmental justice, Sophia seeks to represent Delta South by pushing for progressive policies that protect the environment and uplift marginalized communities. Electing her means voting for a candidate who will fight for a sustainable future and better mental health support for all British Columbians," her bio states.

Voters will get the chance to hear from Borghetto, McCormick and Paton at the riding's sole all-candidates meeting, hosted by the Delta Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday, Oct. 9 at Ladner's Genesis Theatre (5005 45th Ave., adjacent to Delta Secondary School).

Presented by Greater Vancouver Realtors from 7 to 9 p.m. (doors at 6:30), the session will also follow a Q-and-A format and focus on key issues such as transportation, housing, employment, growth and investment, ostensibly from a business perspective, though answers provided at past chamber all-candidates meetings have certainly been aimed at a wider audience.

Questions can be submitted in advance by emailing jennyfer.cassar@deltachamber.ca, and attendees will also be able to submit written queries from the floor during the event. Organizers note that questions asked "from a business lens perspective" may be prioritized.

Admission is free, but those wishing to attend are encouraged to register at  to reserve their seat.

Meanwhile, four candidates are vying to represent Delta North the Legislative Assembly.

Challenging BC NDP incumbent 's bid for a third term in office are  with the Conservative Party of BC,  with the BC Green Party, and  with the Freedom Party of BC.

Voting day is Saturday, Oct. 19.
