The City of Delta is taking ownership of the historic East Delta Hall, ensuring the heritage building's long-term preservation.
On Thursday, June 27, the city announced it had entered into an agreement with McKee Athletic Association, transferring ownership of the hall and its surrounding property to Delta for the nominal price of $1.
The move marks a significant step in preserving local heritage and ensuring the continued use of the iconic community hall, according to a city press release.
"We are extremely grateful to the McKee Athletic Association for their exceptional generosity,鈥 Mayor George Harvie said in a press release.
鈥淭aking ownership of East Delta Hall underscores council鈥檚 dedication to preserving Delta's rich history and culture. This hall will continue to serve as a vital community gathering place, and we look forward to enhancing and preserving it for future generations."
Built by Delta鈥檚 pioneer farming families on land donated by the McKee family, East Delta Hall has been a cornerstone of the community since its opening on Jan. 29, 1931, according to a city press release.
Located at the intersection of Ladner Trunk Road and 104th Street in the farming community of East Delta, the hall has hosted a variety of events including badminton, wrestling, dancing, basketball games, Christmas concerts, weddings, and artisan, craft and holiday markets.
As part of its donation, the McKee Athletic Association has requested city council adopt a bylaw formally recognizing East Delta Hall鈥檚 heritage status.
While the hall is currently listed on the Delta's rural heritage inventory, city staff will present council with a heritage designation bylaw for East Delta Hall at a future meeting to help ensure the long-term preservation of the building.
鈥淲e are pleased to have the opportunity to gift the historic East Delta Hall to the City of Delta," an unnamed McKee Athletic Association representative said in a press release.
鈥淭his hall has been a cherished part of our community for over 90 years, and we are confident that the city will continue to honour its legacy while ensuring it remains a vibrant gathering place for our community."
The city has also entered into an agreement with Mr. Mom鈥檚 World Catering and Events, the current caterer and curator of the hall, to manage bookings and events and maintain the property, in addition to the nearby St. Stephen's Church.
Delta bought St. Stephen's from the United Church in August of 2020 with an eye towards preserving, renovating and re-purposing the now-132-year-old structure.
According to Thursday's press release, the city plans to install a commemorative plaque onsite acknowledging the hall's history and the contributions of the individuals and families that constructed and operated this hall for over nine decades.
