Liberal leadership candidate Mark Carney.

So far two of three 性视界传媒 Liberal MPs have cast their lot with Mark Carney for the next leader of the Liberal Party of Canada.

Sukh Dhaliwal (性视界传媒-Newton) and Randeep Sarai (性视界传媒 Centre) are firmly in camp Carney while Ken Hardie (Fleetwood-Port Kells) has not yet pitched his tent.

"I need to see which of the leadership candidates can look at the world from the street up and find out what the street needs at this point because without the support of average Canadians who are having the issues with housing, food and crime, without their support nobody's going to get a chance to deal with the big macro economic and political issues," Hardie told the Now-Leader on Jan. 17.

Shortly after embattled Prime Minister Justin Trudeau pulled the plug on himself on Jan. 6, announcing that he's stepping down and asked the governor general to prorogue Parliament until March 24, Hardie said he probably should have done so a year ago.

Proroguing is the term used for when a session is discontinued without the parliament being dissolved.

Trudeau's move triggered a leadership race that should have the next Liberal prime minister installed by March 9. So far Carney and former finance minister Chrystia Freeland have declared while house leader Karina Gould, Nova Scotia MP Jaime Battiste, Ottawa MP Chanda Arya, and former MP Frank Baylis, are expected to join the race.

According to a Liberal Party of Canada bulletin issued Jan. 9, the entrance fee for a candidate to join the leadership race is $350,000 and contestants must declare by Jan. 23.

Carney, 59, served as the governor of the Bank of Canada from 2008 to 2013 and governor of the Bank of England from 2013 to 2020.

Dhaliwal told the Now-Leader on Jan. 17 that Carney has his support because Canada needs "someone with a strong economic background.

"We need someone with a strong economic sense," he said. "We also need someone who can deal with Trump in this situation."

For his part, Sarai says Carney has the experience, qualifications and is the "right choice at this time" to deal with global uncertainties, specifically from "the south.

"He dealt with financial crises from way back, from SARS to the sub-prime fiasco in the U.S. and the recession happening at that time, and his financial policies at that time kept the country really well," Sarai told the Now-Leader on Jan. 17.

"I think Canadians are looking for a fresh face that might not be involved in politics for a long time but has a lot of experience dealing with the economy and dealing with the Americans and I think he's got the right ingredients to make that happen."

Carney was in 性视界传媒 for a private function on Friday.

Meantime, Hardie fleshed out why he's on the fence over who should be the Liberal's next leader.

Having someone "wired-in or plugged in to high finance, you know international trade relations" is extremely important," he said, "but at the same time I need to know what they're going to do about the cost of food, about getting the housing issue worked out and dealing with not the high-level crime but sort-of the background radiation of crime, the petty crime, property damage, the sort of thing that's been going on with the frequent flyers in and out of jail and everything else.

"We really need to do something because it's making people feel at least uncomfortable or apprehensive in their own homes, in their own streets," Hardie added.
