ÐÔÊӽ紫ý council has approved a city staff recommendation for more on-street paid parking downtown as well as along the ÐÔÊӽ紫ý-Langley SkyTrain line.

A by ÐÔÊӽ紫ý's general manager of engineering Scott Neuman also calls for "minor increases" to fees in some locations based on a 2024 survey of rates.

Also, on-street parking areas adjacent to SkyTrain stations at 152 Street, 160 Street, and 166 Street "will be incorporated into future Fee Setting Bylaw adjustments," he indicated, "to support" the ÐÔÊӽ紫ý-Langley-SkyTrain expansion.

Neuman told council that the City of ÐÔÊӽ紫ý is "required to establish a combined total of 300 on and off-street parking spaces for SkyTrain park-n-ride users within a 400-metre distance of the SkyTrain stations along the Fraser Highway corridor" with their specific location being at the City's discretion, though the spaces "must be identifiable to the public and TransLink and they must be pay parking."

Council approved the recommendation Jan. 13 without debate.

The City of ÐÔÊӽ紫ý implemented pay parking on some streets in Whalley in 2014. Since then, Neuman noted, there have been "significant" land-use changes near City Hall.

"In addition, there has been an increase in higher utilization of private businesses, such as food producers and mechanic garages, who have been leveraging the use of on-street parking as storage for private business use rather than storing the vehicles on their property."
