Periods of heavy rain are expected throughout the Lower Mainland beginning Tuesday morning (Dec. 17).

Environment Canada issued a rainfall warning on Monday (Dec. 16) for parts of the Fraser Valley, Metro Vancouver, and Howe Sound.

鈥淎 moisture-laden Pacific frontal system will bring rain to the South Coast. The rain, at times heavy, will begin this morning and will ease on Wednesday morning as the frontal system departs,鈥 the warning reads.

Between 50 and 70 mm of rain is forecast for the region. Environment Canada also warned that heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads.

鈥淗igh flows and localized flooding are possible, particularly at lower elevations and in areas with poor drainage,鈥 the warning reads.

The weather warning also advises drivers to maintain a safe following distance with their lights on while watching for possible washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts.
