Ty Young stands tall in the crease on Tuesday (Nov. 19).

Not many goalies can say they sent thousands of children back to school after recording their first-ever American Hockey League win.

Count Abbotsford Canucks goalie Ty Young in that exclusive group of netminders.

Young made 33 saves to help lead the Abbotsford Canucks to a 4-2 win over the Bakersfield Condors on Tuesday (Nov. 19) morning. The game was played at a special time because it was the annual Field Trip Day, which sees busloads of students from all over Bakersfield take in the game.

Young silenced them early, not allowing a goal until 14:59 of the second period and then shutting the door in the game's final minutes when the Condors were pushing.

Abbotsford's Max Sasson opened the scoring with a power play goal at 14:24 of the first period and Danila Klimovich scored his team-leading fifth at 1:40 of the second to put the Canucks up 2-0. Former Abbotsford Canucks defenceman Alex Kannok-Leipiert broke Young's shutout bid in the second period, but Cole McWard restored the two-goal lead just 91 seconds later. Abbotsford led 3-1 after two.

Carsen Twarynski made it 4-1 at 4:58 of the third after a beautiful passing play from linemates Nils Aman and Tristen Nielsen. Bakersfield's Phil Kemp cut the lead to two goals at 8:14, but that was as close as the Condors would get.

Young, who was called up from the ECHL's Kalamazoo Wings earlier this month, was making his second straight start for Abbotsford. The 2022 fifth round pick joined Abbotsford after goalie Jiri Patera suffered an injury.

His second start went a lot better than his first start in Abbotsford on Saturday (Nov. 16) against the Coachella Valley Firebirds, which saw him allow three goals on the first three shots he faced. Abbotsford lost that game 4-3. The Canucks got goals from Ty Glover, Cooper Walker and Nate Smith in the loss.

The Firebirds also got the better of the Canucks on Friday (Nov. 15) by posting a 4-1 win. The two teams were tied 1-1 heading into the third period, but the Firebirds took over in the final frame. Guillaume Brisebois scored the lone goal for Abbotsford.

Abbotsford's record sits at 7-8-0-1 and they sit in fifth place in the Pacific Division.

The team remains on the road for games against the Henderson Silver Knights on Friday (Nov. 22) and Saturday (Nov. 23). The next home game isn't until Dec. 7 when the Colorado Eagles come to Abbotsford.
