White Rock Christian Academy's senior girls single A volleyball squad are headed to provincials.

After winning the South Fraser Valley tournament — their first time since 2017 — the WRCA team is now preparing to travel to Nanaimo to compete in provincials Nov. 28-30.

At the South Frasers, WRCA lost their first set, 25-21,25-21, but came roaring back 25-16,25-21. Game 5 was tied 13-13, and the senior A squad — which has just two Grade 12 players — went on a two-point run to win the tournament, coach Scott Allen said.

Faith Moyo was named MVP of the competition, with Poppy Mellenger and Momo Okuda named All Stars.

“Faith and Poppy have been anchors for our team," Allen said.

"From starting last May to training over the summer ... we knew we were in 'catch up mode' and with their leadership, the team has responded with resiliency and focused on their overall student athlete development."

WRCA is an IB, or International Baccalaureate, school, so the academic expectations are very high in addition to athletic demands, Allen noted.

"Winning a Fraser Valley Banner was very satisfying," he said.

"We are underdogs going into the B.C.s, but we are determined to be at our best once we get to Nanaimo."

The school's overall program starts with the Grade 6-7 team all the way up to the seniors, Allen said.

"The mentorship program we have instilled for senior girls working with youngsters in our school has been instrumental in bringing a renewed WRCA  school spirit," Allen said.

In preparation for provincials, he and his team busy dissecting film and looking where they can turn their weaknesses into strengths, he added.
