It was a golden weekend for a talented local squad of young hockey players.
The Semiahmoo Ravens U13 C4 hockey team emerged victorious at the second annual 12U Winter Classic Tournament in Moses Lake, Wash., winning the gold and bringing home the banner.
Hosted by the Moses Lake Youth Hockey Association, the Ravens dominated the round-robin stage of the tournament, finishing with an impressive 3-0 record.
Their strong defence, anchored by stellar goaltending from Brooklyn Williams, allowed only three goals against, while their high-powered offence scored an incredible 21 goals, securing their spot atop the pool and advancing them to the gold medal game against the Tri Cities Junior Americans, a release noted.
In the championship match, the Ravens faced stiff competition. After an intense first period, the score was tied 2-2. Early in the second period, Jack Rathborne 鈥攑laying in his first season of ice hockey and only his second tournament 鈥 scored the game-winning goal, giving the Ravens a 3-2 lead.
The team added two more goals late in the second period, extending their lead to 5-2. A defensive battle ensued in the third period, with neither team scoring, securing the Ravens鈥 championship victory.
Head Coach Ryan Cyr praised the players' efforts.
鈥淚鈥檝e had the privilege of coaching many of these kids since they were five years old, and now, seeing them come together at 12 and welcome new teammates is truly special," he said. "Every single player contributed to this victory. They were such positive kids on the bench, always encouraging and supporting each other, which made all the difference.鈥
