The union local representing Delta鈥檚 firefighters has endorsed B.C. NDP candidate Ravi Kahlon鈥檚 bid for re-election in Delta North.
In a statement released by Kahlon's campaign Tuesday afternoon (Oct. 8), the Delta Firefighters Association (IIAF Local 1763) cited Kahlon's record while in office and North Delta residency as reasons for backing the incumbent's bid for a third term.
鈥淪ince 2017, Ravi has been a tireless advocate for our community, and has delivered on many improvements like the North Delta Track, the upcoming replacement of the Seaquam Track, and the new turf field which is under construction at Mackie Park," the assocaition said in a press release.
"Ravi is the only candidate who lives in North Delta, and with his positive impact on our community and record of working hard for us, he is the clear choice.鈥
(Editor's note: Freedom Party of B.C. candidate Manqoosh Khan also lives in North Delta.)
A longer statement posted on the association's Facebook page further elaborated on Kahlon's support for, and advocacy on behalf of, Delta's firefighters.
"He has actively listened to our concerns and prioritized the issues that matter most to us. His focus on our profession has made a significant impact," the post states.
"Ravi's proactive approach and willingness to engage with us have fostered a strong relationship that we deeply value. We believe he understands the unique challenges we face and will continue to advocate for the resources and support necessary to ensure the safety and well-being of our firefighters and the communities we protect."
The union previously endorsed Kahlon's re-election bid in 2020.
In a statement, Kahlon said he was grateful for the union's endorsement.
鈥淲hen I was first elected in 2017, I was excited for the opportunity to represent North Delta and advocate for our community. Seven years later, I promise to continue this work and continue delivering results," he said in a press release.
Kahlon is one of four candidates vying to represent North Delta in the Legislature following the election on Oct. 19. Challenging his bid for re-election are Raj Veauli with the Conservative Party of B.C., Nick Dickinson-Wilde with the B.C. Green Party, and Manqoosh Khan with the Freedom Party of B.C.
Meanwhile, in Delta South, the Delta Firefighters Association has likewise endorsed incumbent Ian Paton for re-election.
Paton, who has served two terms under the B.C. Liberal/B.C. United banner, is running this time with the Conservative Party of B.C., opposed only by B.C. NDP candidate Jason McCormick.
On Facebook, the association said Paton has proven to be a dedicated advocate for the community and a strong supporter of the firefighting profession since taking office in 2017.
"Our political relationship with Ian began during his tenure on the City of Delta council starting in 2010, where he consistently demonstrated a commitment to listening to our concerns and addressing the issues that matter most to us," the union said in its post, noting Paton's past service as a volunteer firefighter at Delta鈥檚 Hall 4.
"Ian鈥檚 willingness to engage with our team has fostered a collaborative relationship that we greatly appreciate. He understands the unique challenges we face as firefighters and has worked to support our mission of protecting our members, their families and the community.
"As we look ahead, we are confident that Ian will continue to support and advocate for the needs of both firefighters and the residents of Delta South."
