A North Delta Secondary students has been awarded a substantial scholarship in recognition of his achievements in overcoming adversity and for excelling in his studies.
Joseph Maku was selected by the Cmolik Foundation to receive $45,000 towards his post-secondary education at the University of British Columbia.
鈥淢y goal is to obtain a bachelor of kinesiology, then eventually become a physiotherapist," Maku said in a press release. "My interest in human kinetics is derived from my passion for sports and exercise, and the desire to help others.鈥
Robyn Cleaver, head of the social studies department at NDSS, said there is a quality about Maku that separates him from his peers.
"What I believe is truly remarkable about him is his modesty and ability to connect with people,鈥 she said in a press release, adding he is "well loved by his teachers.鈥
The foundation's selection committee was impressed with Maku鈥檚 application, academic goals and future career aspirations, the release notes, and chose to recognize and honour his hard work and commitment with this financial award.
Maku will also be provided with a mentor and access to a supportive community of peers and alumni, as well as ongoing special events and professional opportunities, according to a press release.
The Cmolik Foundation was founded in 2008 to provide opportunities for youth who have experienced adversity in their lives, according to a press release.
"Rooted in a profound belief in the power of education to transform and empower, we support undergraduate and post-secondary education, mentorship, field trips and summer camps to support the healthy development of our youth," the release states.
The foundation currently has 100 students enrolled in its scholarship program.
