Deep fried donuts stuffed with fruity bits and cinnamon spice are a popular tasty treat among B.C. bakery enthusiasts.
鈥淭hey are our best selling item at our shop. We sell a few hundred of them everyday and sell out of them on most days,鈥 Esquimalt Bake Shop duo Loc Huynh and Hong Nguyen told Black Press Media.
The same holds true in another Greater Victoria area bakery, with apple fritters the top seller at Royal Bay Bakery, said Bradly Kiss, a baker of 25 years, with seven under his belt at the Metchosin shop.
Key to a good fritter is 鈥渁 really great dough and lots of cinnamon and apples,鈥 he said.
And good oil in the fryer.
Huynh and Nguyen concur with lots of small apple chunks 鈥渟o you get some in every bite. And a crispy, sugary shell with a moist and doughy inside.鈥
The pair have been in the baking business at the same Esquimalt Road location for more than three decades 鈥 since 1992. But on Dec. 2, they celebrate their first National Apple Fritter Day.
鈥淪trangely this is the first we鈥檙e hearing of National Apple Fritter Day. We have celebrated National Donut Day, National Eclair Day and various other days dedicated to celebrating some of the delicious treats we make but in our over 30 years of making donuts, no one has brought National Apple Fritter Day to our attention,鈥 the pair told the Victoria News.
鈥淲e鈥檒l be sure to celebrate it to the fullest this year.鈥
And if Esquimalt sells out, they hear Sidney has some tasty ones.
鈥淲e honestly haven鈥檛 tried many other apple fritters locally, but we鈥檝e read on Reddit and social media that Sidney Bakery has a pretty solid apple fritter as well.鈥
Because they鈥檙e closed Sunday and Monday, Royal Bay Bakery won鈥檛 participate in National Fritter Day.
But really, every day is fritter day, according to all the bakers.
鈥淲e think the apple fritter is a very underrated donut. Nowadays everyone is too focused on creating fancy flavours, using exotic toppings/glazes,鈥 the Esquimalt duo said. 鈥淎 quality apple fritter is a timeless classic that in our eyes will always reign supreme.鈥
