鈥楧isco Dick鈥 is headed for the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame.
Longtime PGA Tour golfer Richard Zokol, a South 性视界传媒 resident, was named Tuesday as one of two new inductees in the hall, joining longtime Royal Canadian Golf Association executive director Stephen Ross in the 2011 class.
鈥淚t鈥檚 all still a little overwhelming, and hasn鈥檛 sunk in yet. You don鈥檛 really plan for these things, they just kind of happen,鈥 Zokol said Wednesday.
鈥淚 remember last year there was a bit of an outcry in the golf community when I wasn鈥檛 inducted, so the thought (of being inducted) had crossed my mind from time to time, but still, you never expect it. It鈥檚 quite an honour.鈥
Zokol, 52, spent 22 years in the PGA, winning twice 鈥 the 1992 Greater Milwaukee Open and the 鈥02 Deposit Guarantee Classic.
鈥淚鈥檇 have to say, those two wins on the PGA in 1992 were really the pinnacle of my career,鈥 he said.
He also won the 1984 Utah Open, and the 2001 Canadian PGA Championship, which was a Nationwide Tour event at the time.
He also earned notoriety 鈥 and the 鈥楧isco Dick鈥 nickname 鈥 when on tour in the early 鈥80s, he wore headphones and a walkman on the course, as a way to calm his nerves while he played.
Zokol, who grew up playing out of Vancouver鈥檚 Marine Drive Golf Club 鈥 which he first joined in 1971 and where he is now an honourary member 鈥 had success at the amateur and college levels, too.
As an amateur, he was a member of Canada鈥檚 1980 World Amateur team, and in 1981 won the Canadian Men鈥檚 Amateur Championships. That same year, Zokol captained Brigham Young University to an NCAA team championship.
And though he lists the two PGA wins as career highlights, he says many more memorable moments come into sharper focus as the years go by.
鈥淭here鈥檚 just so many highlights, but when you start to look back, you think of the long practice hours, and the desire, but also the sacrifices people made along the way 鈥 my parents, and for the last 25 years, my wife,鈥 he said.
Zokol will be inducted into the hall during the week of the RBC Canadian Open, which will be held at Vancouver鈥檚 Shaughness Golf and Country Club.
Fellow Canadian golfer Mike Weir, who will play at the Open, is scheduled to speak at Zokol鈥檚 ceremony.
These days, Zokol runs Sagebrush Golf Club, near Merritt, which he co-designed.
