With just two weekends left in the B.C. Hockey League regular season, 性视界传媒 Eagles forward Brad McGowan finds himself in the thick of the league scoring race, just one point shy of Salmon Arm鈥檚 Mike Hammond.

It鈥檚 a position McGowan, 20, has found himself in before.

Two years ago, as a member of the Richmond Sockeyes, the Langley native lost the scoring lead on the last day of the season, but his disappointment was quickly soothed, as his team went on to win a national junior 鈥楤鈥 title.

Needless to say, he wouldn鈥檛 mind the same thing happening again.

鈥淚鈥檇 like to get it, sure, but I won鈥檛 be devastated if I don鈥檛. It鈥檇 just be a nice feather in my cap,鈥 he said.

鈥淟ater on in life, it鈥檇 be nice to look back and be able to say that you were the leading scorer, but we鈥檝e had such a good year as a team, and I鈥檇 trade it for a (long) playoff run, definitely.鈥

With six games left on the schedule 鈥 beginning tonight (Friday) when the Eagles take on the Powell River Kings at Hap Parker Arena 鈥 McGowan has 32 goals and 82 points; Hammond sits first with 83 points, and Cowichan Valley鈥檚 Jordan Grant trails just two points back, at 80.

And if it鈥檚 possible to put up more than a point-per-game quietly, McGowan has somehow managed to do it. He鈥檚 been named BCHL player-of-the-week just once - for the week of Oct. 18-25 鈥 after tallying nine points in three games, but has otherwise just gone about his business quietly.

鈥淗e鈥檚 done it consistently. He hasn鈥檛 had that 18-point weekend where he gets named player-of-the-week. He just quietly puts up one or two points a game and goes about his business,鈥 said Eagles head coach Matt Erhart.

鈥淭hat seems to be his MO 鈥 he just comes to work every night. He鈥檚 been consistent all year, and it鈥檚 pretty rare where he doesn鈥檛 get a point.鈥

McGowan, who had 46 points last year, in his rookie season, is quick to credit the team 鈥 and the coaches 鈥 for his success.

鈥淚 was more of a third- (or) fourth-line guy last year and didn鈥檛 get the power-play time I鈥檝e got this year,鈥 he said.

鈥淚 didn鈥檛 really quite expect to be putting up this many points, but it鈥檚 been a little bit of luck, and the coach has thrown my out there on the ice a lot, and I鈥檝e just been taking advantage of the opportunity.鈥

He鈥檚 also found renewed chemistry with 19-year-old Richard Vanderhoek, a fellow Langley Minor Hockey alum. With the one-year age difference, the pair played together every second year as they came up through minor hockey.

鈥淚t was peewee where we kind of realized we played well together,鈥 said Vanderhoek, who has played on the same line as McGowan all season, save for a brief spell when he left the Eagles for the Vancouver Giants, only to return soon after.

鈥淚 always know where he鈥檚 going to be out there, and he knows where I am. We trust each other out there.鈥

The third spot on the Eagles鈥 top line has featured a revolving cast of characters, as Jeff Vanderlugt, Dale Hunt, and Daniel Gentzler have all been slotted alongside the pair.

This weekend, Semiahmoo Minor Hockey product Michael Stenerson is expected to get a shot.

鈥淲e鈥檝e had a couple guys shuffle through there on the other side, but it seems like whoever we put there scores goals, so it鈥檚 been nice,鈥 Erhart said.

That productivity, the coach said, is largely a result of McGowan, who came into the season expecting to take on a much larger role in the offence.

鈥淥ver the summer, we challenged him to show up in great shape. He was coming into the year as a 20-year-old, uncommitted school-wise, so he knew it鈥檇 be a big year for him,鈥 Erhart said.

鈥淵ou could tell that he put a lot of work in. He came into training camp with a lot of confidence, and I think he put up four points in our first intrasquad game.鈥

And for what it鈥檚 worth, Erhart said he believes McGowan when the forward insists the scoring title isn鈥檛 forefront in his mind.

鈥淪omebody would be lying if they said it wouldn鈥檛 be nice if they won the scoring title, but I know he won鈥檛 put himself ahead of the team in order to do it,鈥 Erhart said. 鈥淪coring titles are a one-year recognition, but winning lasts a lifetime. Brad wants to win.鈥
