Dozens of curlers originally bound for Abbotsford will now be heading out to Maple Ridge in order to try and earn their spot in the Olympic trials later this year.
The qualifying event for the 2025 Canadian Mixed Doubles Trials was meant to be held at the Abbotsford Curling Club, but a chiller issue has resulted in the event being moved to the Golden Ears Winter Club instead.
Golden Ears Winter Club office manager Shannon Joanisse explained that the tournament will involve a series of elite teams and athletes from across Canada, including Olympic curlers Jennifer Jones, Brent Laing, and Lisa Weagle.
In total, 25 teams will be battling it out for their spot in the Olympic trials, which will determine which of the Canadian athletes head to the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy.
"This is a fantastic opportunity for our community and club to come together, support our neighbouring club, and showcase GEWC's warm hospitality," said Joanisse.
The event begins on Thursday, Oct. 31, and continues through Sunday, Nov. 3, at the Golden Ears Winter Club (23580 105 Ave., Maple Ridge).
Tickets are $10 per day and can be purchased at the door.
"We encourage everyone to come out, watch the action, and show their support," said Joanisse.
