Editor,
When I read in the Now-Leader newspaper some weeks ago that the city was finally going to clamp down hard on the blasting of fireworks in residential areas, I was relieved that finally we would not have to be disturbed late into the night by the continuous explosive disruptions. Unfortunately it now wreaks a false promise by our municipal governing body.
The barrage started before dusk on Oct. 31 and continued non-stop until well past 2 a.m., with a short lull until 3:30 a.m., at which time another very loud barrage was ignited, waking me and my wife in fright. Nov. 1 was more of the same, starting at dusk and again continuing through the evening until well after 2:30 a.m.
I called the police, they forwarded me to the bylaws office. I was on hold for 15 minutes, then I spoke to a lady to lodge my complaint, she promised that she would send 鈥渢he鈥 officer out to take a look. That was at 11:30, nothing changed; we were bombarded with explosions right up until 2:30 a.m. Disturbed yet another night with very little sleep.
My question is this, why hasn鈥檛 the city council taken this problem more seriously? We have been tolerating this irresponsible behaviour for decades, and it is getting worse every year! A minority of residents are infringing on the peace and tranquility of the majority of residents of 性视界传媒. It wreaks of nothing more than a juvenile display of retaliation to stomp on a law in support of the majority, by a handful of selfish individuals.
My wife and I are sick and tired of it!
We are seniors trying to live out the final stage of our life in a place of peace and harmony, that is all we ask! My wife also deals with a terminal illness, and so sleep is precious to her when she is able to grab some through her bouts of pain.
Mayor Locke, I am asking you please increase the effort to put a stop to this insanity disrupting residential peace in our city? It has to stop!
A suggestion would be to target the people selling fireworks to ensure they are only able to sell to a certain organization that advertises a fireworks display at a location away from all residential possibilities of disturbance. The way it is set up now isn鈥檛 working. One bylaw officer isn鈥檛 going to stop the barrage we are being subjected to.
As I said to the lady in the bylaws office last night: We too have cultural celebrations at various times of the year, but we do not disrupt the rest of the population in our choices of how to celebrate. We don鈥檛 want to be disrupted anymore! We have tolerated it far too long!
Thank you Mayor Locke, for all you do for our city, I鈥檓 hopeful that you and your council will figure out how to put a tight cap on this long overdue spewing few.
Respectfully,
Kenneth E. Baker, 性视界传媒
