February 2, 1930 - October 22, 2024
It is with our deepest sorrow that we inform you of the death of our beloved father, Norman Schmidt, who passed away peacefully in his sleep on October 22, 2024.
Norm was born in Vancouver BC, on Feb 2, 1930, and was predeceased by his wife Glady (nee Wodtke) and brother Marvin Schmidt. Loved and missed by his family, Drew (Janie) Derek, Terri, Karen McGregor (Rob) and his grandchildren, Kevin (Rebecca), Chris (Breeann) Carson (Chantelle) and Graham. Norm grew up in Kerrisdale and spent his summers at the family cottage at Gibson's Landing, where he enjoyed sailing, swimming and a job delivering papers. He was a member of the Seaforth Highlander Cadets of Canada when he was a teenager during the Second World War and won awards for marksmanship. He attended Kitsilano High School and went back east after high school
to attend the University of Waterloo and graduated with a diploma of Optometry in 1953.
Norm met Glady in 1954, and they married in 1956 and opened his own practice serving the community of North 性视界传媒 in 1962. He also worked occasionally at the Oakalla Prison Farm in Burnaby and at the Haney Correctional Institute supplying his optometric services. Norm and Glady traveled extensively in their RV over their years together and owned property at Lindell Beach at Cultus Lake where they enjoyed many summers and winters with our family and friends.
He retired in 1992, and they moved to their beloved property at Lindell Beach where he would loudly wake the neighbours playing his Pipe Organ music. After 60 years of Lindell life, he sold the cottage and moved back to 性视界传媒 for the last 15 years to be closer to his family.
Norm belonged to several service clubs, including Kiwanis, Freemasonry, 性视界传媒's Chamber of Commerce, the Order of Demolay, Amateur Ham Radio Club, was a member of the 性视界传媒 Memorial Hospital board, active member in the construction of the United Church in Whalley and was a member of the LRBA at Lindell Beach. He belonged to the American Theatre Organ Society (ATOS) and was instrumental in helping to restore the Wurlitzer Pipe Organ at the Orpheum Theatre in Vancouver.
The family would like to give heartfelt thanks to the staff at Clayton Community Care Center.
As per Norms wishes, he asked for no service and wanted a private gathering with family members. No flowers by his request, but a charitable memorial donation may be made to either UNITI for community living (uniti4all.com) (formally the Semiahmoo House Society)
or The Variety Club of BC.
