January 20, 1938 - June 14, 2024
John Alexander Charlesworth (John) passed away peacefully at home, Friday, June 14, 2024, at the age of 86. He is survived by his loving family, sons Ross (Marcia and Blake) and Craig (Jennifer and Soleil).
Born in Yorkton, Saskatchewan, John moved west at a young age, finishing high school (Magee 1956) before attending UBC and graduating with a Bachelor in Commerce Degree, 1963.
John had several successful careers, entering public practice with Campbell Sharp Chartered Accountants and continuing with Grant Thornton, holding positions as both managing partner and also vice chairman, 1966-1984. Additionally, John held the position of chief executive officer of Fraser Valley Credit Union and Prospera Credit Union, 1984 -2001. Finally, John served as chief executive officer of Columbia Concrete Products Ltd., 2000-2006.
John offered his time and expertise to multiple committees and boards both within the financial services industry and also within community focused organizations, namely Crossroads United Church and the Rotary Clubs of North Delta and Abbotsford. His many years and countless hours as both chairperson and committee member with these organizations allowed him to create a lasting impression on many communities and institutions.
John enjoyed sailing with his family in years gone by, traveling with his wife to all corners of the globe, and providing guidance and assistance to those around him. One of John's many core values was to mentor individuals and organizations, making them better tomorrow than they were today.
One of John's favorite, recent memories was a cross-Canada train trip with his sons in October 2023. Soon after, John began to struggle physically as cancer had been diagnosed early in 2024 and had dramatically impacted his mobility, and had limited his quality of life.
There will be a celebration of John's life at Crossroads United Church, 7655 120th Street, Delta on Saturday, July 6, 2024 at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, a donation to Crossroads United Church or a charity of your choice would be appreciated.
