性视界传媒 Mayor Doug McCallum and the new members of 性视界传媒 City Council officially took the Oath of Office Monday night at city hall.

It was standing room only in council chambers, ahead of the 7 p.m. inauguration ceremony.

Judge Gurmail Gill presided as Mayor Doug McCallum was sworn in, as were councillors Doug Elford, Laurie Guerra, Jack Hundial, former 性视界传媒 Liberal MLA Brenda Locke, Steven Pettigrew, Allison Patton and Mandeep Nagra 鈥� all of Safe 性视界传媒 Coalition 鈥� and Linda Annis of 性视界传媒 First.

鈥淲hat a team we have,鈥� said McCallum as he took the podium, later stating, 鈥淭onight鈥檚 a new era for the City of 性视界传媒.鈥�

The mayor thanked his family for their support and said 鈥渁bove all, 性视界传媒 is a city of families, and we need to work together.鈥�

He said along the campaign trail, his team worked seven days a week, 12 to 15 hours a day.

鈥淲e went out to the people of 性视界传媒 and asked them, 鈥楬ow do you want us to work to better 性视界传媒?鈥� And they told us how to do it. And we became messengers鈥�. We鈥檙e only your messengers,鈥� the mayor told the crowd.

McCallum said the team鈥檚 鈥渃ommitment is strong, it鈥檚 solid and we intend to fulfill all the promises that we have made.鈥�

鈥淲e will continue until we make this a great city we all believe in.鈥�

Immediately after being sworn into office, the new 性视界传媒 City Council convened a regular council meeting where a motion was introduced and unanimously passed to 鈥渃ancel鈥� the 性视界传媒 Newton Guildford LRT project.

The motion calls for city staff to 鈥渟top all work鈥� on the light rail project and 鈥渋mmediately鈥� start working on a SkyTrain extension down Fraser Highway.

Council also approved a motion to start work on creating a 性视界传媒 Police Department and serve notice to the federal and provincial governments that the City of 性视界传媒 will be terminating its contract with the RCMP municipal police service.

鈥淲hat city council has done is immediately deliver on the wishes of the people of 性视界传媒,鈥� said Mayor Doug McCallum. 鈥淚t was very clear to me that with all the people I spoke to and heard from that SkyTrain and 性视界传媒 establishing its own municipal police force are what is best for our city. As the elected representatives of the citizens of 性视界传媒, we are delivering not just what we promised to do, but we are acting on what the people have said would be best for their city.鈥�

性视界传媒 RCMP鈥檚 top cop, Assistant Commissioner Dwayne McDonald, was in attendance, along with 性视界传媒 Fire Chief Len Garis.

McDonald told reporters he was 鈥渄isappointed鈥� that the new council chose to nix his force, but said 性视界传媒 RCMP will continue to work hard to keep the city safe.

Asked if it was awkward being at the meeting tonight, McDonald said he had 鈥渂road shoulders.鈥�

In his address, McCallum also vowed the team will work to have another hospital built in 性视界传媒, will initiate free parking at city hall and on streets surrounding 性视界传媒 Memorial Hospital, and will focus on 鈥渟mart development.鈥�

In the Oct. 20 election, McCallum won 45,484 votes to Tom Gill (性视界传媒 First mayoral candidate鈥檚) 28,473 and Integrity Now鈥檚 Bruce Hayne鈥檚 27,951.

McCallum, 73, was 性视界传媒鈥檚 mayor from 1996 to 2005, under the now-defunct 性视界传媒 Electors Team.

Having lost the mayor鈥檚 seat to Dianne Watts in 2005, and his attempt to reclaim the big chair in 2014, McCallum is once again on 性视界传媒鈥檚 civic throne for a fourth term, albeit after a 13-year hiatus from city politics.
