VIDEO: Chilliwack Salvation Army fed 'staggering' number of people in 2024

Number of hampers in Chilliwack handed out has grown by 252 per cent in 3 years

The Chilliwack Salvation Army has seen a "staggering" increase in need over the last three years, and are doing one final push to raise $1 million in donations before the year ends.

The organization launched their March to $1 Million campaign earlier this year and have raised just over $409,000 as of Dec. 31. The day before, Josh Draheim, community partnerships coordinator for the Care and Share Centre in Chilliwack, posted a video to social media running down the numbers while writing them on cardboard for viewers.

He said the food bank has given out 19,000 monthly food hampers this year, which is a 252 per cent increase over the past three years.

"This is staggering," he said in the video. "This is the impact that the food bank is having in the city right now."

They have also seen 55,000 people come through their unique Pantry program, which is a free food store for those who need it. That's a 241 per cent increase over three years, Draheim said.

Finally, this year they gave out 2,000 Christmas hampers, which is an 18 per cent increase from last year. Christmas hampers are larger than the usual hampers, and therefore more costly.

"$250,000 is the approximate cost to the food bank to make that happen," he said. "I don't know if many people know that."

The Salvation Army has been in Chilliwack for 100 years, and has been running their March to $1 Million campaign with events and donation drives throughout the year.
