“Hey dad, what’s that?”
While flying in a helicopter over Newton on Saturday (April 20), Christopher Johnston’s son Jacob wanted to know why so many people filled the streets below.
On a fishing trip, the father and son, 9, were flying from Boundary Bay Airport to Stave Lake.
“I heard about it on the radio, so I remembered what it was,” the pilot said.
ӽ紫ý’s massive Vaisakhi Parade was happening below, leading to a fine aerial photo-op for Johnston of the estimated crowd of 550,000.
“We were bombing along and my son noticed it,” explained the New Westminster resident, a commercial pilot.
“Holy smokes, it was just blocks and blocks and blocks, a sea of people, and it (the parade) caught our attention about five miles away.
“We did a couple turns and snapped some pics.”

The parade made for great photos, but it turns out the fishing trip was a bit of a bust, though.
“Not many fish at all, which isn’t usually the case there,” Johnston said, “but we saw lots of wildlife so that more than made up for it.”
