The Abbotsford Police Department is warning of a taxi scam that swapped several credit cards last week.

A vehicle posing as a taxi was at the centre of a scam in Abbotsford last week.

The Abbotsford Police Department warned of the scam in a social media post on Tuesday (Dec. 10).

According to the post,  a black Hyundai Elantra with a taxi sign on the roof was spotted in Abbotsford last week. Police say two suspects are associated with the taxi, both men in their early 20s.

The scam features one of the men pretending to be a customer struggling to pay.

"He would approach several people within larger parking lots, claiming he needed help to cover the outstanding amount," APD said. "When some individuals agreed to assist and handed over their debit or credit cards, the vehicle's occupants covertly swapped out their cards."

Similar incidents are occurring throughout the Lower Mainland, police say.

"Investigators believe this taxi to be fraudulent and not associated with any reputable company," the post reads.

APD advised the public to report any suspicious activity.
