A Mission senior was the victim of a new car scam last week.
According to a Mission RCMP release, a local man received a call from a company informing him he won a new car.
To receive the car, the scammer told the man he would have to pay a $1,200 processing fee in the form of Apple gift cards. The senior bought the gift cards and sent them.
The man later realized there was no car and he was defrauded. He reported the scam to Mission RCMP on Nov. 29.
鈥淭hese types of scams are prolific, and the best defence against them is to speak to your friends and family 鈥 especially elderly persons 鈥 and ensure they are aware of these common scams,鈥 Mission RCMP said.
鈥淛ust remember: If it鈥檚 too good to be true鈥t鈥檚 a scam; If someone threatens that you will be arrested if you don鈥檛 immediately pay a sum of money鈥t鈥檚 a scam; and finally, if anyone asks that you pay a fee or a fine with gift cards鈥t鈥檚 a scam.鈥
