Two new EV fast charging hubs are now up and running in Delta.
On Thursday (Dec. 12), BC Hydro in collaboration with the City of Delta opened the second of two new charging hubs in the community, this one outside the Delta Sport Development Centre (aka Delta Gymnastics) at 4680 Clarence Taylor Cres.
The hub has four 180-kilowatt dual port chargers, which can add up to 180 kilometres of driving to an average EV in about 10 minutes, and two 100-kilowatt chargers.
In October, the city and BC Hydro completed the first hub, located at Sungod Recreation Centre (7815 112th St.). That location has four 180-kilowatt dual port chargers.
Together, the two hubs add 18 new charging ports to Delta鈥檚 EV charging network.
鈥淲e are grateful for this partnership with BC Hydro to support the growing number of zero-emission vehicles in our community,鈥 Mayor George Harvie said in a press release.
鈥淏y offering EV chargers at our facilities, we are providing a convenient and efficient option for electric vehicle owners, further supporting the adoption of EV technology in our area. The availability of more EV fast chargers in Delta is a critical step towards fulfilling our commitment to a greener, more sustainable future.鈥
A press BC Hydro press release notes that, in addition to being faster, the 180-kilowatt units also offer dual charging or power sharing, which allows two customers to use the same charger. For example, a 180-kilowatt charger can adjust to provide two 90-kilowatt charging ports.
Both hub locations feature a curbless design, cable management systems and a lower display on the new chargers for better accessibility. As well, some of the units are also equipped with NACS (North American Charging Standard) connectors to support charging a variety of different electric vehicle models.
According to BC Hydro's press release, adoption of electric vehicles across the province has increased significantly, with more than 170,000 EVs now on the road. The company predicts there will be between 700,000 and 900,000 EVs in B.C. within the next 10 years.
