Cat and kittens found in abandoned vehicle in Abbotsford

Two cats also found in similar situation in Vancouver

The BC SPCA is currently caring for several cats that were found inside abandoned vehicles that had been towed, including in Abbotsford.

Eileen Drever of the SCPA said in the Abbotsford incident, a cat and two kittens were found inside an abandoned vehicle with flat tires that was towed to a tire shop.

"In this case, the cats were brought to an animal hospital who reached out to the BC SPCA asking if we could take them into care," she said.

The cat and her kittens are currently being fostered and will be available for adoption in approximately three to four weeks, Drever said.

Another incident involved an elderly black female cat and a grey male cat that were also found inside an abandoned vehicle that had been towed.

鈥淭he cats were living in a hoarding type of situation. The car was filled with hazardous items, rotting food and garbage throughout," Drever said.

Staff at the towing company provided the cats with food and water. They were particularly concerned about the senior cat, who wasn't moving but would eat when food was placed in front of her, Drever said.

A BC SPCA animal protection officer went to the towing company.

鈥淭hey reported that the vehicle鈥檚 windows were closed, and it smelled strongly of feces and urine,鈥 Drever said.

鈥淚t took quite some time to get the cats safely into carriers as the cats were nervous and they tried to retreat to the rear of the vehicle, where there was a concern some of the haphazardly stacked items would fall on them," she said.

Both cats were safely contained and brought to the BC SPCA鈥檚 Vancouver animal centre.

The grey cat has already been adopted, but the elderly cat is still waiting for a home.
