Former 性视界传媒 mayor Doug McCallum has announced his slate will keep the same name as the last election, as he makes another bid to hold the city鈥檚 top spot once more.
In a press release Wednesday, McCallum鈥檚 鈥淪afe 性视界传媒 Coalition鈥� promised that if elected, the team would work to get rid of RCMP and start 性视界传媒鈥檚 own police force 鈥渢hat will be much better able to deal with local issues.鈥�
The slate also vows to scrap the 鈥渟econd-rate LRT in favour of SkyTrain along Fraser Highway,鈥� and to pause development to 鈥渃ome up with smart community development guidelines that include affordable housing.鈥�
Safe 性视界传媒 also announced Bableen Rana would be the slate鈥檚 newest council candidate.
Rana, who has been a lawyer for 17 years, is past president of the Newton Rotary Club.
Rana served on 性视界传媒鈥檚 Parks and Recreation Commission when McCallum was first elector as mayor.
鈥淗er experience there solidified her passion for community service,鈥� a Safe 性视界传媒 release notes.
Rana says she鈥檚 running with Safe 性视界传媒 because she knows Doug McCallum and 鈥渂elieves in his integrity鈥� and 鈥渞espects his passion, focus, and commitment to 性视界传媒.鈥�
鈥淢y first priority is having 性视界传媒 citizens feel safe and secure 鈥� on their streets and in their neighbourhoods,鈥� said Rana in a release. 鈥淭he RCMP has done its best, however, the citizens of 性视界传媒 need more and they deserve more. The rapid growth in the city has outgrown the police resources. The structure of the RCMP as a paramilitary force is no longer a good fit for 性视界传媒. We need a 性视界传媒 Police force that clearly focuses on local concerns and gets results.鈥�
Earlier this week, Doug Elford also joined McCallum, who served as 性视界传媒鈥檚 mayor from 1996 to 2005.
Elford is a longtime Newton advocate and until recently, was president of the 性视界传媒 Community Alliance (SCA) slate he founded.
An SCA press release stated the party would be withdrawing from the election due to lack of funding, but SCA candidate Imtiaz Popat said in a subsequent release that Elford鈥檚 split caused the 鈥渄emise鈥� of the party.
Popat said other members of the 性视界传媒 Community Alliance 鈥渁re not giving up鈥� and are looking at other ways to continue their campaign.
Previously announced council candidates for SCA included Elford, Popat, Asad Syed, Saira Aujla and Bernie Sheppard. The team鈥檚 school board candidates were Niovi Patsicakis and Aronjit Lageri.
Other teams in the upcoming civic election are People First 性视界传媒, Proudly 性视界传媒, 性视界传媒 Integrity Now and the reigning 性视界传媒 First.
性视界传媒 voters head to the polls on Oct. 20.
