Have you ever thought about a career in trades? The Squamish Nation Training & Trades Centre (Snttc) is offering a great opportunity to all Indigenous individuals, including Status, Non-status, M茅tis, and Inuit, to develop marketable skills needed in the booming construction industry.
More opportunities for Indigenous students
With the SNTTC鈥檚 recent expansion of its North Vancouver campus, located on the traditional Skwxw煤7mesh 脷xwumixw territory, they added an Industry Training Authority-approved electrical workshop to the existing carpentry and plumbing shops. The new facility has 50 per cent more floor space, meaning more classrooms, more space and more opportunities!
The SNTTC is a unique place for Indigenous students to learn, offering a full suite of wrap-around services. They combine traditional and vocational methods, incorporate cultural instruction, and Elder mentorship to support the educational aspirations of all their students and to help them find success and job satisfaction.
Building success though skilled trades
Lynn Michels enrolled in the Squamish Nation Training & Trades Centre鈥檚 Carpentry Foundations program in 2016 鈥 her initial course at the Centre gave her the skills to complete the Level 1 Carpentry program at BCIT and she has recently graduated from the SNTTC Level 2 Carpentry program.
During her education, Lynn enjoyed working on her practicum with Ellis Don at the Parq Casino project in Vancouver, and has returned to work with Ellis Don and became member of the BCRCC, Local 907.
鈥淚 cannot speak highly enough about the SNTTC鈥檚 Carpentry programs and the supports provided. They helped me with everything I needed to get to where I am today 鈥 the staff, instructors and supports they provide are awesome.鈥
The future looks bright indeed!
Even more opportunities available
After working at several jobs in the restaurant and retail sector, Keishon Ross was prompted to enrol with the SNTTC when his grandma showed him a poster for the Electrical Foundations program.
Following an excellent educational experience, including an amazing instructor who was helpful and supportive, Keishon has followed his studies and 10-week practicum with an apprenticeship with Western Pacific Enterprises.
Like Lynn, Keishon credits his success to the team at the SNTTC. 鈥淚t was a great place to take the program 鈥 the team provides lots of support, including meals, training and a travel allowance. I鈥檓 looking forward to a career in electrical!鈥
