Two days after the BC United announcement that rocked British Columbia's political scene, 性视界传媒's NDP candidates are pondering what the new political landscape will mean for them.
On Wednesday, BC United leader Kevin Falcon announced he was suspending the party's election campaign and, in a joint press conference with BC Conservative leader John Rustad, announced the two parties would work together in a united front to defeat Premier David Eby and the BC NDP.
In 性视界传媒, where 10 ridings hang in the balance, the road may have become more difficult for NDP candidates, who will now presumably be facing one opposition candidate on the right, rather than two who could have split the vote 鈥 and, potentially, helped to pave the path to victory for the New Democrats.
Eby, in a visit to 性视界传媒 Friday (Aug. 30), made it clear he has every intention of going after centrist voters who may have been leaning towards BC United but who may see the BC Conservatives as too far to the right.
"We were definitely prepared for a consolidated vote, but it was surprising to see it consolidate around the furthest right position," Eby told Black Press Media. "So I think there's an opportunity for us to talk to a lot of BC United voters who feel stranded right now by Mr. Falcon's decision."
Darryl Walker, who's running for the NDP in 性视界传媒-White Rock, noted the announcement leaves a big question hanging over the local race in his riding, where the current MLA, Trevor Halford, belongs to BC United. The BC Conservatives had already named Bryan Tepper as their candidate.
"I think it's the same question that everybody is asking themselves. Who is going to be the candidate that's the chosen one?" Walker said, adding that's a difficult situation for both Halford and Tepper.
"They've been out working, as have I, for a good long time. How do you pluck one and say, 'that's the one,' unless there was a deal cut yesterday or the day before," Walker said.
What it all means for the NDP remains to be seen, he said.
"it's going to be difficult. I've already had people in the community that I know aren't necessarily New Democrats saying, 'What does it all mean' and honestly, I don't know," he said. "But they're concerned, and it's going to mean that they may not know which way to go."
Gary Begg, who's running for the NDP in 性视界传媒-Guildford, said it's no surprise that the election will be just be against the BC Conservatives.
He, like Eby, took aim at the "extreme" views held by some BC Conservatives.
"There have been countless instances of extreme positions and conspiracy theories within Rustad's party, views that do not align with the majority of people in 性视界传媒-Guildford," he said. "However, none of these changes we are seeing will alter David Eby and the BC NDP's focus on what really matters to people. Whether that's action on housing, cost of living, or health care, David Eby's BC NDP will be in this for you, not just for those at the top."
Jagrup Brar, who is running for the NDP in 性视界传媒-Fleetwood, continued the party's anti-Rustad messaging.
"His record shows that he cost people more by making cuts to health care, and implementing fees and tolls. Yesterday's events do not change that," Brar said.
"David Eby's BC NDP government will continue to keep working hard to deliver on the things that matter for the people of 性视界传媒. From expanding health-care services, to addressing housing needs, the BC NDP will continue being a champion for the issues that matter most."
Mike Starchuk, the BC NDP incumbent for 性视界传媒-Cloverdale, expressed his empathy for BC United candidates. He noted he was chairing an inter-party committee when members of BC United scrambled to their phones on Wednesday.
鈥淲hen I looked at the three BCU members, they were completely caught off guard,鈥 said Starchuk. 鈥淭hey had no clue what was going on. I think it surprised everybody.鈥
Starchuk said he鈥檚 known Falcon for a long time and said his decision would have been 鈥渆xtremely difficult鈥 to make.
Starchuk added that he feels for the candidates and their families, who have put in a lot of work to get to this point.
鈥淎 lot of these people, although they're part of the other team, they鈥檝e got lives and they鈥檝e been put on hold,鈥 he said.
