MUSIC NOTES: Weezer space-travels to 'Blue Planet' with catchy hits aboard

Music views, news and reviews covering ÐÔÊӽ紫ý and Metro Vancouver

Does planet Earth boast a better power-pop band than Weezer?

Probably not, and the L.A. quartet proved as much during a trippy, space-geek rock show at Rogers Arena in Vancouver on Friday, Oct. 4.

Singer/guitarist Rivers Cuomo and gang headlined a fun night of '90s-era music starting with Dinosaur Jr., who grunged up the hockey rink with just six songs including a Cure cover ("Just Like Heaven"), followed by the party-time props and antics of The Flaming Lips.

Weezer's current celebrates the brilliance of the band's 1994 debut "Blue" album, played in full. But first, while dressed in NASA-like uniforms, they took concert-goers on a tour of the galaxy, rocketing there with "Hash Pipe," "Beverly Hills," "Island in the Sun" and other hits, along with the misses of 1996's polarizing Pinkerton album.

With ultra-catchy hooks layered over simple, buzzing riffs, Weezer's best songs grab and don't let go. Go ahead, try not to yell out the "Say It Ain't So" chorus with 17,000 other fans. Want an ear worm? "Surf Wax America" will do the trick with the memorable line, "You take your car to work, I'll take my board; And when you're out of fuel, I'm still afloat."

Today, 30 trips around the sun later, Weezer's debut is pretty much a greatest-hits album, worth celebrating.

Last time in town, in August 2023 at Ambleside Park in West Vancouver, Weezer's creative stage was a giant car dashboard, with steering wheel, radio dials, speedometer and such.

This tour, their "Voyage" boasts an amazing stage with one giant space ship and arched video screen, dangling planets, rock formations, and all the smoke, pyro and space-y visuals you'd expect. Cuomo planting the Weezer flag on the "planet" was a nice touch (before launching into "My Name is Jonas"). Mock news clips entertained, and the film-like closing "credits" detailed the work of a small army that staged the concert,  of North America before the band blasts off for Japan in 2025.
