A 37-year-old man with an extensive criminal history has been arrested and charged following an incident on Monday night (Dec. 16) in Abbotsford in which he allegedly rammed police vehicles with a stolen pickup.
The Abbotsford Police Department (APD) used beanbag rounds and a police dog to take the man into custody, according to a news release.
Police suspect the man was reaching for a gun before the beanbag rounds were shot. He was taken to hospital with minor injuries.
Police say the suspect was first spotted at 9:20 p.m. driving eastbound in a stolen Toyota Tacoma pickup on Highway 1 in the Coquitlam area by a member of the Lower Mainland Integrated Police Dog Service.
APD says the vehicle had been stolen during a residential break-in in Burnaby on Saturday (Dec. 14).
鈥淭he stolen vehicle was covertly tracked into Abbotsford with assistance from Abbotsford Police patrol plainclothes officers until it entered the parking lot of the Sandman Hotel on Mt. Lehman Road,鈥 the news release reads.
Officers moved to pin the vehicle as it parked but the driver attempted to flee by ramming police vehicles.
Police were able to stop the pickup but the man was 鈥渘on-compliant with police direction鈥 and reached behind the vehicle, the release states.
鈥淒ue to the ongoing non-compliance of the suspect and belief that a weapon was present, police deployed less-lethal beanbag rounds and a police dog in an effort to gain the suspect鈥檚 compliance and take him into custody,鈥 police said,
APD says a gun was found where the man was reaching, along with items stolen from the Burnaby break-in.
Video of the takedown 鈥 taken by Callie L. 鈥 was posted on social media.
According to court records, Ander Walker-Huria has been charged with seven offences 鈥 dangerous driving, obstructing a peace officer, driving while disqualified, having ID that wasn't his, and three weapons charges.
He remains in custody.
Walker-Huria has a criminal history that includes a 2009 manslaughter conviction in Squamish for the fatal stabbing of 16-year-old student Sam Eves at a house party.
According to news reports at the time, Walker-Huria stabbed Eves after a verbal altercation in March 2007. As Eves lay dying on the sidewalk, Walker-Huria left the scene, resulting in a massive manhunt that included a police helicopter and roadblocks. He turned himself over to police.
Walker-Huria was sentenced to four years, but due to credit for time served, he only had another 10 months left at the time of sentencing.
Other news reports indicate that he was arrested and charged in Winnipeg in March 2012 after fleeing from police in a car that wasn't registered. At the time, he had several outstanding warrants in Ontario and B.C.
Court records indicate that Walker-Huria has numerous prior convictions in B.C. for offences that include uttering threats, break-and-enter, breaching his probation, possession of stolen property, dangerous driving, theft over $5,000, impaired driving, failing to stop at an accident, obstructing a peace officer, theft of a motor vehicle, and being unlawfully at large.
