The Sidekick Players Club is closing out its 2023-24 season with a two-weekend run of Norm Foster's The Long Weekend later this month.

Co-directed by Laura Sutherland-Smith and Carroll Lefebvre, The Long Weekend is billed as a hilarious look at marriage and relationships and how the seeming normal or mundane can really be extremely dysfunctional — and vice versa. The result is a delightful two-act "comedy of manners" about four characters who really don’t like each other, and two of the worst long weekends ever.

"When Max (played by Jeff Pannell) and Wynn (Cathy Collis) invite their friends Roger (Doug Perri) and Abby (Erica Bearss) up for a weekend at their country home, the true nature of their relationships unfold. What follows is a hysterical battle of innuendos and attitudes where secrets are revealed, poor decisions are made, and it becomes clear that the grass isn’t always greener on the other side of the fence," reads a synopsis of the show included in a recent press release.

Co-director and club president Carroll Lefebvre assures audiences that despite its dramatic-sounding premise, The Long Weekend is a very funny play.

"You might ask how a show about four flawed characters who don’t even want to be in the same room together can be so entertaining. One reason is because the personality flaws of the characters give them dimension and keep the conflict interesting and fresh. You’re just never sure just how the characters are going to react to one another," Lefebvre said in a press release.

"There’s also a series of twists from the first to the second act that makes you wonder how it’s all going to come out in the end. But what makes this play so much fun to watch is the strength of the four actors who so clearly enjoy working together."

"Truth be told, it could be a lot raunchier," Lefebvre continued, "but Foster is a master at generating laughs without crossing the line. It’s all lighthearted comedy that combines to make this another in the long list of classics from Foster."

The Long Weekend opens Friday, June 14 and runs through Saturday, June 29. Evening performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m., with 2 p.m. matinées on Saturdays and Sundays. Reserve seats by calling 604-288-2415.
