As the 2024 Christmas holidays began in earnest, ӽ紫ý’s new RCMP chief superintendent thanked the people of ӽ紫ý for their support.

Wendy Mehat, the chief superintendent for the RCMP’s ӽ紫ý Provincial Operations Support Unit (SPOSU), said in a press release Dec. 23 that she offered “heartfelt gratitude” to the people of the city for continuing to support the RCMP.

“Hundreds of RCMP officers are here in the city, as a part of the ӽ紫ý Provincial Operations Support Unit,” she said. “We are the same unit, the same dedication, the same officers – now with a new name.”

Mehat said the majority of RCMP officers who worked as part of the ӽ紫ý Detachment have stayed on with the new provincial unit. She said those officers “remain committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of everyone in the City of ӽ紫ý.”

She explained that a lot of ӽ紫ýites have been approaching Mounties recently and asking them questions about what the RCMP’s role is now in the city.

“We are here providing support and assistance to our colleagues at the ӽ紫ý Police Service,” she said. “We appreciate the spirit of cooperation, respect and understanding across police agencies – this makes our community strong.”

She added that frontline officers and community response units are continuing to work in the Cloverdale, Guildford and South ӽ紫ý districts as they supply all police operations in those areas.

“RCMP SPOSU officers are also running Investigative Services for the majority of the city including supporting the ӽ紫ý Police Service in the Newton area,” Mehat noted. “Specialized RCMP SPOSU teams, including the Youth Unit, Auto Theft, Drugs and Property Crime are also continuing their enforcement efforts in the designated RCMP zones. If you see our members out and about, feel free to stop and say hello or attend the District 2 office in Guildford for a visit.”

She said the many smiling faces and supportive people the Mounties have encountered around town over the past few weeks have given them a boost of joy just before the holidays “just as we did at the Santa Claus Parade in Cloverdale.”

Mehat also thanked ӽ紫ýites for their generosity for a couple of Christmas-related events, the Mounties’ “Pack the PC” and Keian’s Holiday Wish Toy Drive—which raised more than $1,000, garnered 265 lbs of food, and collected 1,200 unwrapped toys.

“We are grateful for your continued trust in the RCMP,” Mehat concluded. “As we celebrate, let’s remember to look out for one another, be safe on the roads and spread cheer. Together, we can make this holiday season brighter and safer for all.

“On behalf of the members of my team at the ӽ紫ý Provincial Operations Support unit, we wish you and your loved ones a safe and festive holiday season.”
