Both ÐÔÊӽ紫ý Memorial Hospital and Peace Arch Hospital delivered baby girls as the first babies of 2025.
At ÐÔÊӽ紫ý Memorial, mother Sreedevi Purushothaman Nair gave birth to Vaiga Vinay at 1:08 a.m. on Wednesday (Jan. 1).
She weighed in at five pounds, nine ounces, and was a little early, father Vinay Koodathil shared.
"We never expected it to be on New Year's Day," he said from the hospital Thursday. "She went into labour at 12 o'clock, and within an hour, the baby came out!"
Vaiga is their first chid, Koodathil said, and her due date was Jan. 22, 2025.
When Nair went into labour at midnight on Wednesday, they were expecting it to take several more hours, not barely one hour, he noted with a chuckle.
"When she started labour she was four centimetres dilated. It was supposed to be another (several hours) to complete dilation, but within a half hour, she was dilated completely," Koodathil said.
Mom and baby are both doing well, he said, and they were able to go home later on Thursday.
"It was a great experience — everyone at ÐÔÊӽ紫ý Memorial was so great, all the doctors, all the staff, they were so good."
In White Rock, another ÐÔÊӽ紫ý family also welcomed a baby girl at Peace Arch Hospital, who was born a little later the same day.
Mother Jaskiran Dargahi and father Jas Nijjar welcomed their yet-unnamed baby girl at 9:46 a.m. Wednesday.
She weighed six pounds.
