For the second time this year, the city is giving away hundreds of trees to Delta residents.

Following the "overwhelming" success of the first phase of its Planting Our Roots 鈥� Free Tree Project in March, the City of Delta is offering another batch of free trees this fall via an online lottery.

The initiative is aimed at not only helping residents beautify their property, but also contributing to the city鈥檚 goal of 40 per cent canopy cover, as outlined in the Delta's .

鈥淒elta truly embraced Planting Our Roots this past spring, and I am glad to see the project back again, giving away 250 more trees to enrich our community,鈥� Mayor George Harvie said in a press release. 鈥淚nitiatives like Planting Our Roots strengthen community bonds, enhance our neighbourhoods and benefit Delta鈥檚 natural environment. I encourage Delta residents to enter the contest for a chance to win their very own free tree.鈥� 

This season鈥檚 giveaway will include five varieties of tree: vine maple, Dawyck purple beech, Judy Zuk magnolia, California incense cedar, and liberty apple.

Starting at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 18, residents will have a week to visit the city's website and enter a draw to win a free tree. When entering the draw, residents will be asked to rank the five species based on preference, and which type winners get will be determined based on their preference, depending on remaining tree availability.

Recipients will receive their free tree, delivered to their door, in mid-October, in time for fall planting.
