With song, a ӽ紫ý social justice choir raise money for a pair of local charities.
The 28-voice have made benefit concerts an annual tradition at Northwood United Church, where “Be A Light” is planned Saturday, June 8, starting at 7 p.m.
This year’s beneficiaries are ӽ紫ý Women’s Centre and The PLOT Community Sharing Garden in Newton, and the concert will feature 10 songs that reflect the concert title.
“All the selections focus on making a positive difference in the world,” explained Yvonne Gamelin, Aequitas Singers member.
“The songs range from much loved, very recognizable pieces to those that are lesser known. All of our song choices have an optimistic, inspirational message. Both our beneficiaries will speak about the work they do to improve lives within the community of ӽ紫ý.”

Founded in 2013, the Silvia Grassi-directed Aequitas Singers rehearse at the church on Tuesday evenings, September to June.
Last year, the choir performed a ““Love Can Build a Bridge” benefit concert for Read ӽ紫ý White Rock Society, Phoenix Society Treatment Services & Programs Society and Pathfinder Youth Society. A year before that, in June 2022, a “Finding Colours in the Grey” concert was the choir’s first public performance since 2019, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In 2021, Aequitas Singers pivoted to Zoom rehearsals and recorded . The digital project involved individual recordings of choir members edited together by sound engineer Lee Garrido.

In Newton, the landscape could soon change at The PLOT garden site, where the City of ӽ紫ý wants to build a $310.6-million Newton Community Centre. The original location was on King George Boulevard, south of 70A Avenue, where a “groundbreaking” event was held in September 2022, but plans changed with the current ӽ紫ý council, and now all eyes are on city-owned land south of Newton Arena off 136B Street.
