For a June run, the musical story of is brought to a Langley stage with ӽ紫ý’s Sarah Houghton in the starring role.
The triple-threat performer plays lead character Anya in Theatre in the Country’s production, staged June 5 to 22 at the company’s dinner-theatre venue on Glover Road.
Houghton is a “sparkling actor” who “really makes this role her own,” raves Reg Parks, artistic director, who saw 114 local performers audition for the 26 roles in the show.
“So many wonderful voices, gifted dancers and actors are taking this show to a special place in TIC history,” Parks said. “It has been just a joy to watch it come together.”
Set amidst the backdrop of the Russian Revolution, “AԲٲ” follows Anya, a young woman who embarks on an adventure to uncover the truth of her identity. With the help of a charming con man and a lovable ex-aristocrat, Anya navigates the glittering streets of St. Petersburg, the opulent palaces of the Romanov dynasty and the enchanting landscapes of Paris, all while evading the sinister forces determined to stop her.
Other ӽ紫ý-area players are in the show include Timothy Maron (Vlad the con man who ends up protecting Anya) and ensemble member Amy Meeks. Behind the scenes, Tamara Jaune is the choreographer, and Heather Borden is an assistant stage manager.
Based on the feature film, this Lauren Trotzuk-directed version of “AԲٲ” features a memorable score by Tony Award-winning composers Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens.
It’s an “epic tale that gives the viewer a unique personal perspective on a dark time in history,” Parks added. “With unforgettable characters and timeless themes, ‘Anastasia’ is a musical experience like no other. Audiences can expect an evening of enchantment, laughter, and heartwarming moments that will stay with them long after the final curtain falls. Our directing dream team of Lauren, Jayda and Tamara has really brought this show to a magical life.”

Dinner is served at Theatre in the Country, or people can buy show-only tickets. At 5708 Glover Rd., the venue is not fully licensed, but alcohol is served on opening/closing nights, and also Fine Wine Fridays.
Looking ahead, TIC will present Ken Ludwig’s “The Game’s Afoot” in September and “Mary Poppins” in November/December.
