Transportation advocate Jason McCormick is BC NDP's candidate for Delta South in this fall's provincial election, happening Saturday, Oct. 19, 2024.

Jason McCormick has been acclaimed as BC NDP's candidate for Delta South, with this fall's provincial election a little more than two months away.

The party announced McCormick's candidacy in a press release last Thursday evening (Aug. 8), calling his run a renewed commitment to "look out for everyday people and defend against powerful interests."

According to his bio, McCormick is a bus driver for TransLink and a community leader who has fought for better public and active transportation for more than a decade.

He is "extremely active" in B.C.'s cycling community and the South Delta Basketball Association, growing the latter to more than 400 youth participants, and is ready to take action for young people, families and commuters in the riding.

鈥淚n Delta South, our community is facing real challenges. We need a government that is ready to take those challenges on. That鈥檚 David Eby鈥檚 BC NDP,鈥 McCormick said in a press release.

鈥淛ohn Rustad鈥檚 Conservatives have promised to tear up our housing plan. They鈥檙e promised to cut our health care and they won鈥檛 properly fund public transit. With them, we鈥檒l pay more and get less. We can鈥檛 afford the risk.鈥

BC NDP leader David Eby said that, as a long-time transit driver, McCormick knows how policy works "not just in theory, but in reality."

"With deep local roots and years of community involvement, he will bring his practical, hands on experience to the legislature for the people of Delta South, fighting for affordable housing, responsive health care, and a strong transit system that gets you where you need to go," Eby said in a press release.

McCormick is the second candidate to declare he will run for Delta South's seat in the Legislature. Current MLA Ian Paton announced his intention to  under the BC United (formerly BC Liberal) banner in late January.

To date, no other parties or candidates have stepped forward in that riding, though the Conservative Party of BC has previously said it intends to run a full slate in the upcoming election.

Meantime, four candidates have joined the race in Delta North.

BC United's declared his candidacy in April, while NDP MLA announced he would be seeking a third term in office in May and Conservative Party of BC hopeful threw his hat into the ring in July. Also running is Freedom Party of BC hopeful .

So far no one from the BC Green Party has declared their intention to run in Delta North, nor have representatives from other parties or any independent candidates.

Candidate nominations with close at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 28, while the election takes place on Saturday, Oct. 19.
